My favorite snake
Corn Snake, aka red rat snake, is the best.
They're beautiful, useful and of the dozens I've caught, I've only been bitten twice and it was the by same snake. They are very friendly snakes; most corn snakes let you pick them up like you were an old friend. If I knew how to post a picture of a corn snake, I would Maybe someone else will. Beautiful and friendly and useful snake right here: |

Re: My favorite snake
I think I may have seen one in upstate NY when I was a little kid, I was moving logs around and one of them was hanging out near some plants by the logs. I ran away screaming :tongue_ma:
They're useful? For what? Balancing ecosystems or something? Good for gardens? |
Re: My favorite snake
Awesome picture!! Thanks, Baphomet Jones.
One cold winter, a long time ago when I was living in a ground floor shotgun apartment in the city, I found a corn snake had moved into my apartment and under my fridge for the warmth of the motor. His tail would stick out onto the kitchen floor. It was the best looking thing in that apartment. I only touched it once, to entertain someone; he pulled his tail all the way under the fridge, but the next night he was out there again. . Almost forgot to tell you they're useful 'cause they eat rats...hence "red rat snake." They're helpers if you store grain...hence "Corn snake." |
Re: My favorite snake
Very cool :D I'm not too freaked out by snakes, I just keep my distance. Its a mutual respect thing, I hope they keep their distance from me :tongue_ma:
In the spring/summer I'm going to start planting some veggies, I'll keep my eye out for corn snakes. |

I had a ball python for a pet, ended up giving him to my mom. She hated snakes until she got to know them. Now she thinks he is an excellent pet! Easy to take care of, and makes no noise.

Corn snakes are beautiful!
I love snakes. I love reptiles! My husband is very afraid of snakes, however, and doesn't want them in the house. I do have a living room full of lizards, though. |
Re: My favorite snake

Texas Rat Snake

Re: My favorite snake
I’ve seen a black racer in N.Y. play possum for a while, till it decided to put on the jets and scat away at incredible speed.
Snakes are an interesting example of nature, but I would never have one as a pet. Very interesting note about the snakes pupils, I’ve never heard that before. |

Re: My favorite snake
She's beautiful! I also have a red tegu. He's a rescue who came to me in unbelievably poor shape: starved nearly to death, with layers and layers of stuck shed, missing toes, and almost unable to walk because his feet were all tightly curled under. He needed lots and lots of TLC, but he's come through it all. The poor little guy is a real survivor. Now he's grown into a big boy with a handsome face and really ugly feet! Being the survivor he is, he has his own stash of freeze-dried turkey and fruit down in the basement with the SHTF supplies. :D
I currently also have a couple of Uromastyx Mali and four Chinese Leopard Geckos. I also had a black and white Chacoan morph tegu that died last winter. He'd had mysterious health problems for almost a year and had been seeing a good herp vet, but we were never able to determine what was going on with him (he died under his heat lamp, so we couldn't necropsy him). |

Re: My favorite snake
My old Australian grandma says the only good snake is a dead snake there are few snakes that made it out of her chicken coop alive I can still remember
a 80 year old very frail lady beating a large "5 feet" brown into submission with her walking stick she told me it was the chicken that warned her. I grew up a little more tolerant of them and realise how important they are and will happily leave them alone or move them if I must rather than kill them. carpet pythons were well known and left alone to catch rats. |
Re: My favorite snake
I used to keep snakes and other reptiles. Worked weekends at my brother's pet store, keeping them clean and feeding them. None of the other folks wanted to do it so I did.
Personally, I've had red tail boas, ball pythons, ret. python, emerald tree boa, and king snakes but my favorite of all time was my savanna monitor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_monitor I had mine for about 5 years and don't have any pictures. Died by burning himself on the water heater. It is not a beginner reptile. I wouldn't recommend one to folks who don't already have a herp or two. Our cat is aging and I won't buy a reptile with him in the house. (I don't like having my herps delivered, dead, to my doorstep. ) Once he passes on, I do plan on purchasing a red tail boa for the kids and I. Red tail boas are very nice as pets IMO. They are personable and don't require a lot of upkeep. (and they don't stink like the monitor....) I'd really like another monitor but it isn't a kid pet. The red tail is much more kid friendly. Then again, my stinky old cat may live for another 10 years. That wouldn't be bad either. :D Blorp |
Re: My favorite snake
Oh,
And yes, rattlesnake does taste good. Big ones have a surprising amount of meat on them. Very similar in taste to frog legs or chicken. Then again, I deep fried it so who would have guessed that huh? Blorp |
